Hello
My name is Marijke Wijnen. I provide individual therapy for adults in Illinois.
People come to me because they struggle with out-of-control feeling behaviors or emotions and want to take concrete steps to make a change in their life.
We might be a good fit for working together if you struggle with impulsive behaviors such as binge eating, overspending, and snapping at loved ones, or you struggle with anxious thoughts that cause you distress and prevent you from doing things that you love.
In my work I balance being warm and caring with pushing my clients to make changes that help them build the lives they dream of. Together we will identify what has gotten you stuck and will help you build the skill set to move forward.

Specialty Areas
I work with adults of all ages, with a focus on students, young adults and new or expecting parents. I welcome queer folks and folks in non-monogamous relationships. I always attempt to work from an anti-racist, body-inclusive and trauma-informed perspective.
Stress &
Anxiety

I work with folks struggling with racing thoughts, intrusive images, and uncomfortable body sensations due to anxiety. I help folks build new ways of interacting with their anxiety so that they can build a life full of the things that are important to them.
Emotional
Outbursts

I work with clients who struggle with emotional outbursts such as yelling, saying things they later regret, etc. I help clients identify triggers and vulnerability factors and help clients build skills to effectively cope in these situations.
Obsessive
Compulsive
Disorder
I utilize exposure and response prevention (ERP) to help folks overcome compulsions that are interfering with their lives and gain a new sense of freedom.
Depression
& Low Mood

Folks often come to me struggling with low mood and having trouble completing life tasks and taking joy in life. I work with folks to build skills to better cope with challenging emotions and help folks throw themselves into building a life they are excited by.

Disordered
Eating

Many folks come to me feeling out of control around food. I help folks restore their relationship with food and build trust in their body. I often work with people struggling with binge eating, binge-restrict cycles, or food preoccupation.
Communication
& Relationships

Healthy relationships are key to mental health. I work with folks to build the interpersonal, boundary setting and communication skills to nurture thriving relationships.
Perfectionism
& People-pleasing
I often work with folks who hold themselves to impossibly high standards or continually put the needs of others above their own. I support folks in identifying their own needs and priorities and in building the tools to set boundaries and let go of perfectionism.
Skin-picking and Hair-pulling
I work with folks who struggle with skin-picking, hair-pulling, and other body-focused repetitive behaviors. I help folks build the practical and emotional tools to chart a new path forward.
TREATMENT APPROACH
I believe that therapy should be a deeply collaborative process. This means no two sessions ever look the same because I am always responding to the individual needs of the person I'm working with. In my work I draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches to help my clients achieve their goals, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
